Milngavie – Drymen

The Start of the West-Highland-Way

The day before we walked to the railway station in Milngavie. On this day, our host gave us a lift. First we bought the inevitable midge repellant. We were slightly puzzled to read “skin lotion” on the bottle, but we have been assured that even the british army uses the product.

When we posed for the obligatory photo at the start of the West-Highland-Way it started to rain. How lucky we were. ;-) We started the way at quite a fast pace, we thought. Anyway, we were overtaken by some obviously well trained walkers.

Glengoyne Distillery

Our first and only stop was Glengoyne Distillery. We had our lunch packet and thought about taking the tour of the distillery. After a look at the watch we decided against the tour and opted for a short look for souvenirs in the shop, before continuing our way towards Drymen.

To Drymen

With the Sun being undecided wether to shine or wether to hide behind the clouds we easily reached the 16 kilometer mark. The last three kilometers were a lot harder. The way did get just a bit steeper and went a bit up and down. That was enough for our bodies to think: “Stop!” We had to get to Drymen anyway and overheard our bodies’ whining and just went on. Arriving in Drymen we wondered how much farther we had to go and had a look in our papers. To our surprise we already stood right across the street of our B&B. It was just in time as the B&B anticipated their guests to arrive by four o’clock.

Drymen is a very small village and therefore the choice of a place to eat was quite simple. It was the hotel at the center square just beside our B&B.

Glasgow

Council Chambers

After a very delicious breakfast we walked to the train station in Milngavie. Having had a less than optimal experience with the bus the evening before, we wanted to try another means of transportation. However the price was considerably higher.

We arrived at Queen Street Station. St. George Square is just south to the station, so it was our first stop in the morning. Situated right at the East side of the square are the Council Chambers of Glasgow. We thought you could have a tour there. But, despite having a look into the hall, there was nothing offered for tourists.

Edinburgh to Glasgow

Journey to Glasgow

After our third night and a full breakfast in Cherry Tree Villa, we left the B&B. We had planned to go to Glasgow by train. We walked our way to the train station consequently. There is a tourist information at the train station where we had a second thought about our decision for the train. It turned out that busses are have as expensive as the train. Consequently we continued our way to the bus station. We just managed to buy two open return tickets, before the bus departed.

Edinburgh – Day 2

National Museum of Scotland

Our second Day in Edinburgh started with a breakfast that did not give any opportunity to train English. Nearly all of the guest were from Germany.

As a contrast we took part in a guided tour in the National Museum of Scotland. Our guide was Lydia, an elderly woman. She began by telling us that we had the honor to be guests on the last tour she would give in the museum before her retirement. She had some difficulties walking, so the tour was restricted to the ground floor of the museum. That was no blemish. It was our chance to get an insight to Lydia’s excellent knowledge of Scottish history. The tour was brilliant.

Edinburgh – Day 1

Arthur’s Seat

The second day started with a look out of the window at Cherry Tree Villa. The picture to the left shows just that view. After our first full Scottish breakfast we began our first day of sightseeing in Edinburgh.

To get an impression of the hiking days to come, we went to Arthurs Seat. That is a summit, just over 210 m high, in Holyrood Park. When we arrived at its base, we found the answer to a question, that we got in the airplane on approach to Edinburgh: What are all these yellow patches on the ground? The answer: Gorse.

The next question was: Where is the way up to the summit? Answer: Take a walk half way round the hill. The quite easy climb was rewarded by the splendid view on Edinburgh with its castle and harbor.

Hamburg – Edinburgh

On May 23, 2009 we started our first holiday for this year. The plane was scheduled to take off around 11 o’clock. So, we had to get up just like on any weekday to make it. The plan was to take the S-Bahn route S1 which leads directly to the airport from our nearest S-Bahn station. But, just on this day there were construction works in progress and the S-Bahn service was substituted by busses starting from Barmbek. We had plenty of buffer time and thus no need to panic.

The weather started out sunny and continued that way throughout our way to Heathrow. After a 3 hour stay we boarded the connection flight to Edinburgh. On arrival in Edinburgh or luck had left us weather-wise. It started to rain. “Scottish weather” – we thought. To our surprise it cleared up again when we left the airport building.

We took the Airlink to the city center, where we took the bus to our B&B.

Hafengeburtstag 2009

Last Sunday was the final day of this year’s Hafengeburtstag(harbor’s birthday) in Hamburg. I had the morning free and took my D5000 out for a photo walk. Hamburgs Landungsbrücken tend to get very crowded on these occasions. Thus I went there quite early. I also took the old tunnel under the Elbe to get the view from the South side. Here are the best photos:
